'Josh' is a series of 4 books following the life of 15 year old Josh and his family in the difficult changing times after World War II living in Lund in the Yorkshire countryside. Tractors have now taken over the jobs that the shire horses used to do, so how do they make a living now?
Following the life of 15 year old Josh and his family in the village of Lund, East Yorkshire, during the difficult changing years after World War II when the role of shire horses on farms had been taken over by tractors. What can they do now to earn a living with their two shires, Mojo and Banjo?
Life is difficult for Josh and his family as they strive to find ways to make a living using their beloved shire horses. Collecting scrap metal from around the local farms and villages is their first success, then they take over an abandoned coal yard. There is lots to learn but at least their increasing herd of shire horses and carts are now working and bringing in regular income every week so the business can expand.
Josh and his new wife Joyce in their shared desire to work with their expanding herd of shire horses, buy a landau for the two most magnificent shires to pull taking brides to their weddings. Josh's dad Alf also uses two shires for a logging contract in Dolby Forest but coal and log deliveries are still their main, day to day business.
Josh and his family plan to move to the seaside taking their herd of shire horses with them. The move is plagued with problems but determination get them there in the end and Scarborough has it's first fleet of specially built, shire horse drawn carriages driving fare paying passengers up and down the sea front promenade.
Country stories with a difference.
